An estimated 500 million people worldwide became infected. Many cities closed theaters and cinemas, and placed restrictions on public gatherings. Rotary clubs adjusted their activities while also helping the sick.
This is how Rotary responded to the influenza pandemic that began in 1918 and came in three waves, lasting more than a year. The Rotary Club of Berkeley, California, USA, meets in John Hinkel Park during the 1918 flu pandemic.

Rotary and the United Nations have a shared history of working toward peace and addressing humanitarian issues around the world.
During World War II, Rotary informed and educated members about the formation of the United Nations and the importance of planning for peace. Materials such as the booklet “From Here On!” and articles in The Rotarian helped members understand the UN before it was formally established and follow its work after its charter. Many countries were fighting the war when the term “United Nations” was first used officially in the 1942 “Declaration by United Nations.” The 26 nations that signed it pledged to uphold the ideals expressed by the United States and the United Kingdom the previous year of the common principles “on which they based their hopes for a better future for the world.”

Every hero has an origin story. “I was 10 years old when the entire journey started,” explains Binish Desai. It began with a cartoon called Captain Planet, an animated TV series from the 1990s about an environmentalist with superpowers. Desai can still recite the show’s refrain: Captain Planet, he’s our hero / Gonna take pollution down to zero! “That tagline stuck in my mind,” he says. “I wanted to do something to help Captain Planet.”

Women are active participants in Rotary, serving their communities in increasing numbers and serving in leadership positions in Rotary. The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary. “My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01. The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.

In early 1919, Rotarian Roger Pinneo of Seattle, Washington, USA, traveled to the Philippines to try to organize a Rotary club in Manila. Leon J. Lambert, a Manila business leader helped Pinneo establish the club. Several months later, on 1 June 1919, the Rotary Club of Manila was chartered and became the first Rotary club in Asia.
The club would be the only one in the country for more than 12 years. Eventually, Manila club members organized Rotary clubs in the Philippine cities of Cebu (1932) and Iloilo (1933). Iloilo club members then started a club in Bacolod (1937), and Rotary continued to expand across the country.

Thank you to our new President Mary Wolfe for bringing in the morning meeting. We would like to thank Rotarians Shuchi Thakur and her mother Chetna Kapool from Rotary Club Chandigach Midtown, District 3080. It was exciting to hear about all that this club is doing in India to help eradicate not only Polio, but HIV and TB in their country. Shuchi talked about how parts are so poor that they did not even have electricity. Their club was able to bring electricity to school and how some children had never even seen this and how the "magic" of light was to them. #rotaryclubofplymoutham #plymouthrocks #rotarydistrict3080 #rotaryclubchndigachmidtown

Mariners Inn is located in Detroit and serves as an anchor for those struggling to navigate the treacherous waters of homelessness and substance abuse through a wide range of social service programs that achieve the best possible outcomes for adults, families and youth affected by addiction. They have already had a lot of excitement from the guys over seeing the little free library.

In July 2017, at the beginning of this Rotary year, Rotary International President Ian Riseley issued a challenge: for every Rotary club to plant one tree for each Rotary member. His goal in doing so was twofold. The first goal was obvious: trees are good for us. They absorb carbon and release oxygen, they support biodiversity, they improve our soil, our climate, and our moods. We need more of them, and planting trees is a wonderful project for all Rotary clubs to do together. On another level, he asked Rotarians to plant their trees by Earth Day to raise awareness of issues that are too rarely mentioned in Rotary. While not an area of focus, the environment is a physical reality that underpins every area of Rotary’s work, and we ignore its health at our peril. Often, opening our eyes and our thinking to environmental issues means moving from a mindset of reaction, to one of prevention. Is it better to provide a community with an alternative to contaminated water—or to use a sanitation project to keep contaminants out of the water to begin with? Is it better to treat children with respiratory issues from indoor cooking fires, or to help prevent those illnesses—and slow deforestation—by helping families find other ways to cook their meals? The answers are obvious, and the reasoning behind them should be applied to all of our work. If we want to build a better, healthier, and more peaceful world, we need a healthy planet to do it on. So, on Earth Day, members of the Rotary Club of Plymouth AM came together to plant 20 trees donated by Kankakee Nursery, one of Christensen’s Plant Center suppliers in Plymouth on the property of New Morning School in Plymouth. We accepted Ian Riseley’s challenge and are very happy to report that we rose to the challenge and we worked to make our world a better, healthier place!

Greater Plymouth Service Project Wants You To Feed Children In NeedBenefits "Kids Coalition Against Hunger" If you want to help feed children who are hungry or in need, the 2018 Greater Plymouth Service Project is looking for volunteers for their food packaging event to benefit the “Kids Coalition Against Hunger” (KCAH). Volunteers will be packaging food on May 12th from 8am-3pm at the Plymouth Arts and Recreation Complex in Downtown Plymouth. “The goal is to recruit 1,550 volunteers,” says Doug Wallace of Plymouth Township, the membership director for the Plymouth Community Chamber of Commerce. “All ages are welcome.” Volunteers are needed to package more than 500,000 meals that are planned. The event benefits several organizations as they help supply children with the essential food they need in life. All of the packaged meals are distributed to three different sources. One-third of the meals goes to local communities and various food pantries such as food banks, soup kitchens, and backpack programs at schools. The next third is distributed to over 18 countries that “Kids Coalition Against Hunger” supports. The last third goes to and is stored in the KCAH Michigan Warehouse for disaster relief support. “Our mission is to significantly reduce the number of hungry children in the USA and feed starving children throughout the world,” says Nick Schultz, Chairman of the event. “We accomplish this by delivering a highly nutritious meal that was developed by food scientists to provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins needed by an undernourished child’s body and mind.” Here’s a list of organizations that have helped raise money for this year’s meals: -Local Service Clubs, such as Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions. -The Churches of NorthRidge and Our Lady of Good Counsel. -The Chamber of Commerce. -The Community Foundation. -Plymouth Arts & Recreation Complex. -Many local businesses. -Private Citizens, like The George & Mary Smith Family, who donated $10,000 paying for 35,714 meals. If you want to or know someone who would like to volunteer or donate, sign up at cfplymouth.org/may12 or call (734) 453-1540. You can see an overview video of last year’s event here.

The Month of December in Rotary is Disease Prevention and Treatment. This is one of the Foundations Areas of Focus and one in which many of us would be aware of the numerous projects around the world supported by clubs and the Foundation. I urge you all to look at your role in promoting improved health at home and abroad and supporting these vital programs that contribute not only to healthy communities but peaceful communities. Disease Prevention and Treatment. Rotary's top priority is the eradication of polio, but Rotarians take on far greater responsibilities to fight disease. They set up health camps and training facilities in undeveloped countries and in communities struggling with HIV/AIDS and malaria. They also design and build the infrastructure for doctors, nurses, governments, and partners to reach the one in six people in the world who can't afford to pay for health care. Disease prevention and treatment takes on many forms, from supporting studies to helping immunize people to improving drinking water and the sanitation infrastructure. The world relies on Rotary to tackle these global challenges, and to set an example for others to follow. 1 billion people suffer from neglected tropical disease such as dengue fever and leprosy each year. Health Care 1 in 6 people worldwide cannot pay for health care. 100 million people are pushed into poverty each year because of medical costs. 57 countries have fewer than 23 health workers for every 10,000 people. 4.3 million doctors, nurses, midwives, and other skilled caregivers are needed worldwide. Disease Prevention What you can do - Support health education programs that explain how diseases are spread, and promote ways to reduce the risk of transmission.Carry out immunizations against infectious diseases.

On October 3, 2017 Jeanne Knopf DeRoche, a charter member of the Rotary Club of Plymouth AM, shared with the Club and Foundation that she had made a commitment in her will to leave the Rotary Club of Plymouth AM Foundation a gift in memory of her son Sean Knopf DeRoche and her husband, Frederick "Fred" DeRoche. She not only established this bequest, the first in the history of the Rotary Club of Plymouth AM Foundation, but she also presented a check to Foundation President, Nick Schultz, along with the legacy gift. Jeanne hopes that this will be the start of a long tradition of legacy bequest gifts to the Rotary Club of Plymouth AM Foundation by former, current and future members of our club. Thank you Jeanne for inspiring us and thinking about the future of Rotary!

Kids Against Hunger focus of May 7 Greater Plymouth Service Project
Posted on May 03, 2016
Coverage by fellow Westland Rotarian Julie Brown from the May 1, 2016 Plymouth Observer on the Greater Plymouth Service Project
Kids Against Hunger focus of May 7 Greater Plymouth Service Project
Isabelle Schultz is a great cook, something her son Nick knows well.
“She came from a family of 10 Italians,” he said of his morther, who recently marked her 60th wedding anniversary with husband Carl. “She knows how to do it.”
The senior Schultzes of Plymouth Township were a key part of Wednesday evening at the Plymouth Arts & Recreation Complex, 650 Church St. The Greater Plymouth Service Project, to benefit the Kids Against Hunger Coalition, is approaching there Saturday, May 7.
That day, some 1,200 volunteers will gather at PARC to package meals for the hungry. On Wednesday, Isabelle Schultz prepared meals for about 30 people from the package, which serves about six people each.
“It really isn’t that hard,” she said, after transporting her home-cooked food to PARC for dinner. “It’s really a pretty quick meal.”
For the 30 guests, Schultz added onions, red and yellow peppers and garlic. She sauteed the vegetables and used a little Worchestershire sauce, along with celery, “just whatever I had around.”
“Especially in this, the olive oil helps,” she said. “But there’s a lot in there to begin with.”
She agreed a basic dinner — with a protein, starch and vegetables — is already in the package and just needs boiling and serving.
“It’s a healthy meal for a family,” husband Carl added.
A committee chaired by Dave Siegrist of Plymouth Township was meeting down the hall to work out details for May 7’s initiative at PARC, a first-time endeavor. Some $35,000 has been raised in support, with food for about 126,000 meals ordered, Siegrist said.
“Everybody loved it,” Siegrist, who chairs the Community Foundation of Plymouth, said of the food Wednesday. “I know I went back for seconds.”
Siegrist and Carl Schultz are both active Kiwanians. “They’re the ones that got involved very early with Kids Against Hunger,” Nick Schultz noted about Kiwanis, which is among service clubs, student groups, the Plymouth Community Chamber of Commerce, Community Foundation of Plymouth, Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Plymouth-Canton Schools, Wilcox Foundation and other supporters.
Checks or money orders payable to Community Foundation of Plymouth are welcome at: CFP-GPSP, P.O. Box 700866, Plymouth, MI 48170. CFP is a 501(c)3 nonprofit entity.
Volunteers are also still needed; to volunteer, send an email to douglas@plymouthmich.org by Thursday, May 5.
Committee member Nancy Caviston said, “From what I understand, there’s going to be a lot of people” May 7. She’s in the Kiwanis Club of Colonial Plymouth and noted Kiwanis’ extensive work with Kids Against Hunger.
“I’m going to be there” May 7, Caviston said: “I may be manning the information table. The actual packaging is going to be huge, from what I understand.”
Isabelle Schultz had prepared such a meal at home years earlier for charity work and this time Dave Siegrist said, “Isabelle, you’ve got to come and cook up a meal,” Nick Schultz said.
A couple of side salads and dessert were added for the occasion Wednesday, with leftovers going to Plymouth Opportunity House. It was back down the hall at PARC for committee members to work out final details before heading home for the evening.
“We’ve got the full community involved,” Siegrist added.

Kids Against Hunger Event this Saturday May 7th
Posted on May 02, 2016
Teamwork’s the key to success for the upcoming Greater Plymouth Service Project.
“It’s about all of us as a community that are coming together for a service project,” said steering committee member Nick Schultz of the Saturday, May 7, event at the Plymouth Arts & Recreation Complex, PARC, in downtown Plymouth.
Organizers are focusing their efforts on Kids Against Hunger, with plans to work three shifts that day, two hours each, on an assembly line to pack meals. Schultz in a recent interview showed the bag which contains six meals, feeding those six people at a 28 cents a meal price.
Our Club will be packing meals this Saturday, May 7 between 8:30 am and 10:30 am - you can sign up here - http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0b49aaa62da0fa7-may7th

Rotary AM Meeting April 9, 2013
Posted by Beth Stewart on Apr 08, 2013
WE had a great planning meeting this morning facilitated by Dick Schmidt. Dick is helping each of our committees to envision our projects and goals for next year to help plan our fundraising. This has helped keep us on task, identifying projects and setting goals.
Six of our members are planning on attending the District Assembly at Schoolcraft College this Saturday morning. We hope to get an update fromt hem at our next meeting.
Next week our speaker is Charlotte Luttrell, from Ms Molly Foundation (www.msmolly.org). The Ms. Molly Foundation believes all people deserve to feel safe in their own homes. The Ms. Molly Foundation empowers communities to stop the cycle of violence in the home and gives victims of domestic violence a second chance for happiness. Domestic violence is a growing nationwide problem. While millions of victims report this crime, there are many others who are just too afraid their situation is beyond anyone's help. This will be an interesting meeting - please bring a friend!
Have a great week everyone!

Rotary Meeting - January 29
Posted by Beth Stewart on Jan 28, 2013
A foggy morning at the end of January was made much better by getting together as Rotarians to meet and share breakfast, fun facts, and planning for our club success. We got to check out the terrific soup bowls our members made last week during our visit to the Plymouth Pottery Guild - thanks to Leslie Greeneisen - we all painted our bowls and waited for them to be fired. Actually they all looked beautiful even though most of us don't consider ourselves artists!! We had a great time and helped support a great cause as well.
Next week we are going to continue our discussions with club members in our committees so come prepared with great ideas.

Rotary AM Meeting January 15, 2013
Posted by Beth Stewart on Jan 14, 2013
A few of the hardy members came out on a very cold morning for our meeting! Maybe everyone is fighting a cold or the flu - We know President Tim was down with a cold and Pre-elect Sam practiced running the meeting. Even Pastor Dorian ended her prayer with a sneeze instead of AMEN!
Please note: The Mardi-Val Party to raise funds for the Ghana project has been postponed. We discussed new date in May and will confirm when we have venue and entertainment lined up.
NEXT MEETING- we are doing something really FUN next week and are meeting at the Plymouth Pottery Guild!
Address: 340 N Main St # G11, Plymouth, MI 48170 Phone:(734) 207-8807
We are going to have breakfast, get a little tour and then paint our own soup bowls which will be fired and we can pick up the following week when the guild hosts the 2013 Soup Swap! Bring $15 for your bowl if you want one. When you pick up your bowl you will recieve a fabulous container of homemade soup prepared by the "Over-the-Hill" gang of chefs - and if YOU bring a can of soup (or 2 or 3) it will be donated to the Salvation Army - everybody wins!!

Rotary AM Meeting November 13, 2012
Posted by Beth Stewart on Nov 12, 2012
We had fun welcoming Palm Reader, Darlene Denning this morning! She told us a lot about ourselves using numerology and having us read our own palms and we discovered some interesting things about some of our members...... !! Darlene will also be joining us for the Senior Christmas Party and will read palms and have some fun with the folks while they are waiting in the lobby for the doors to open for the dinner.
Remember to mark your calendars for Sunday, December 9 for the Senior dinner - we need volunteers from 2:30 - 7:00 pm - Please come and help on this great annual project!
We also need all Volunteers to report to the Salvation Army on Main St. just south of AA Road THIS SATURDAY at 1:00 pm for our volunteer service helping with their Thanksgiving distribution. This service, in addition to the 370 boxes of Mac and Cheese we supplied, is another important service project for our club.
Ted Barker, now sporting a moustache, rounded out the morning with a Sergeants program on all kinds of moustaches - who knew there were so many different kinds and names for each! Women without them had to pay a buck :)
Have a great rest of your week and see you all on Saturday at the Salvation Army.

Rotary AM Meeting October 2, 2012
Posted by Beth Stewart on Oct 01, 2012
Your Editor was basically "asleep" during the month of September and so newsletters were not done. However, that doesn't mean that our Club wasn't super busy! We had a very successful Rotary AM SPaghetti Dinner during Fall Festival - so successful in fact that we couldn't keep up with demand. Beautiful weather and lots of good publicity can be credited with bringing out hundreds of people to enjoy a fantastic meal. As always, we could NOT accomplish this task without the leadership of Club President, Tim Patino! Knowing how to run a restaurant helps, but serving 800-900 people within a short period of time takes real organizational skill and thanks to Tim we were up to the challenge.
Thanks to everyone who worked so hard all day and into the night to make the dinner successful and thanks to Kate for working on the Pastabilities Book and making that a super success as well. We had to visitors to the club meeting last week who got the book in the mail and came to check us out! We also have welcomed several guests recently and we hope they continue to visit and hopefully decide to join our club.
We had great programs in September as well including Michigan Philharmonic Conductor, Nan Washburn who shared the Michigan Phil 2012-2013 season with us and last week we enjoyed a wonderful program by Leaders Dogs with visitors, Dante and Patrick - both great dogs who enjoyed being at our meeting!
The week, we thank Sam and Judy for sharing "Hope is Not a Strategy" - an excellent video presentation about the work they do with non-profits and leadership. Their message was also especially appropriate for our Rotary Club in helping us define who we are and what we want to accomplish. Thanks for sharing your work and vision with us this morning.
Thank you to Cathy P who was the ONLY member to remember that the first meeting of each month is when we bring in toiletries for the Salvation Army. Please mark your calendars to help you remember this each month. Our friends at the SA really appreciate our help on this important drive to keep their shelves loaded with very needed items for the families they serve.
Have a great week and hope to see you ALL next Tuesday morning!

District Govenor Visit
DG Mary Kehoe visited out club today along with Asst. Gov. Dave Cash. We were happy to join Mary is congratulating Jeanne with her Diamond Paul Harris Pin! Jeanne has been very generous to our club and to Rotary and we appreciate it. Mary informed us about the theme for this Rotary Year which is PEACE. We have the opportunity to join thousands of other Rotarians in Dist 6400 and other community leaders for a Walk for Peace in Windsor on Friday September 21. For more details visit the district website. www.district6400.com
We were also visited by former Interact President, TJ Madigan - who is now VP of the U of M Rotaract Club. TJ got his start with Rotary through Interact as a sophomore at the Park and continued through college. The U of M Rotaract Club has already done 2 International trips to Honduras and Guatemala - in both places they were so pleased to find many signs of Rotary's presence through Shelter Boxes and water wells already in place. Great to see a young Rotarian living out all he learned about international service and world peace through his work with Rotary!
Next week: Michigan Philharmonic Music Director and Conductor Nan Washburn will share the upcoming season of the Michigan Phil.

Rotary Meeting - November 6, 2012
Posted by Beth Stewart
ELECTION DAY! We had a smaller than normal turn-out this morning - presumably because everyone was waiting in line to VOTE somewhere! We did have a very productive meeting however, discussing the many upcoming events and volunteer opportunities we have for the holiday season - both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
We have offered to help the Plymouth Salvation Army with food distribution on Saturday November 17 but have also taken on the responsibility of providing the 325 boxes of Mac and Cheese that they are in need of as well! Each member today donated $20 to the cause and Audrey is hitting Costco and getting the product. If you would like to contribute to the cause she will appreciate it!
We are also planning our Senior Christmas Dinner on Sunday December 9 - we need ALL our members to be present and work on this important event - this is one our most important (and appreciated!) annual projects. Please mark your calendars and make sure you can attend and help out.
We have the Tanger Christmas Party coming up as well - Wednesday December 12 - again this is an important and super fun event we do for the students and families at Tanger School to help them celebrate the holidays in an atmosphere which helps the students feel comfortable.
We had a guest Sergeant today - John Stewart - who came and did a Michigan history test for all of us - In the spirit of the political season he handed out quarters for correct answers and then required everyone to give back $1!!
Rememer to VOTE TODAY!
Next week we will have a preview of a bit of fun entertainment we have lined up for the Senior Christmas Dinner when we are visited by a PALM READER - you won't want to miss it :)
